High School Talks

Specialized talks are given to local high school Norman High about interesting topics in the geosciences.

Elementary School Outreach

Visiting local elementary schools and teaching them about the earth sciences. They love when we bring our rock and mineral collection to display! Schools can also come visit us at the Sarkeys Energy Center where we show them our lovely mineral displays, our labs and core cupcakes!

Summer Exploration

Summer science camp at the University Oklahoma where Pick and Hammer students taught young students about the geosciences.

Middle School-Science Olympiad

Specialized tutoring and lessons are given to local middle school students to prepare them for the yearly Science Olympiad competition covering topics in the geosciences.

Rock and Mineral Kits

Club members helped create and assemble rock and mineral/Mohs hardness kits. These kits are used for teaching and are given to local schools to assist teachers in teaching the geosciences.

Community Outreach

Specialized events with local community organizations like the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts where Pick and Hammer students teach about the geosciences.

Science in Action

Science in Action Day is a family-friendly event held by the Same Noble Museum. Pick and Hammer Club had a booth where we had mineral samples for display and activities for the kids.

University of Oklahoma Lab Tours

Club members along with OU faculty give detailed tours and demonstrations of the many labs and facilities located on campus.

GSA Presentation

For the 2015 GSA conference, past and Present club officers worked together to write a presentation to help teach the steps towards getting public outreach programs started at other universities. 

Outreach Abroad Presentation

In December 2015, our Public Outreach officer went back to her home country in Pakistan and conducted a series of geology career talks at different schools. The aim was to create awareness about geology as a potential career path and perhaps create future geologists
