Italy Study Abroad Trip Fundraiser // February 25

The fundraiser will be on Wednesday, February 25, from 10 am to 3 pm in Sarkeys room 340. If you are going on the trip, you must volunteer at this event if at all possible! Any other volunteers would be greatly appreciated, so watch your emails! We will be selling T-shirts and raffle tickets for a variety of items, as well as auctioning of a few of the minerals we bought in Tucson.

Sky Ranch Elementary Sarkeys Visit // February 18

Sky Ranch Elementary School will be visiting us Wednesday, February 18, from 9:30 am to 11:00 am. We need people to volunteer to do a variety of activities, such as lead groups around Sarkeys, show the kids the mineral cases on the second floor, and lead the seismic or stream table activities. Valentine's Day Sale // February 13

The club will be selling chocolate and rose rocks Friday, February 13 from 11 am to 3 pm in Sarkeys outside the second floor elevators. Make sure to stop by and buy a rose for that special someone (or just for yourself!)!

Howdy Week Booth // August 20

We will be manning a table at the Howdy Week Involvement Fair. We will be talking to new students and telling them about our club. Right now, we have enough volunteers to maintain the booth, but we'd really like to have a few more people to help tell people what our club is about. If you are interested, fill out the doodle poll below for which shift you'd like to take. The event will be in the South Oval from 10:30 am to 2 pm.

George McGhee Collection Cleaning // September

We will be cleaning and organizing the donated rock and mineral collection of George McGhee this month. The collection is being used for outreach purposes in the community, as well as being auctioned off to finance trips and social activities for the club. Let us know if you are wanting to help and when you would be available so that we can schedule a weekend to clean these rocks.

Pick and Hammer Meeting // September 4

This is our first meeting of the year so we have a lot of stuff to talk about! We will be voting on revisions to our Constitution, telling you about upcoming trips and outreach events, as well as talk about possible future events. Come on out to find out about our club and eat free Cane's Chicken! The meeting will take place in SEC M130, which is on the first floor on the north side of the building.

Glass Mountains Trip // September 20

We will be taking a trip to Glass Mountains on Saturday, the 20th, to hike and collect selenite crystals. We will leave from the East Sarkeys lot at 8 am and should be back around 4 pm (it is about a two and a half hour drive). You will need to bring sunscreen, water, a lunch, and anything else to protect you from the heat. You will also need to bring something in which to put your collected samples. Please RSVP by September 14.

Highland East Junior High: Rock Collection // September 24

Pick and Hammer members will be traveling to Highland East Junior High in Moore, OK to identify and organize rocks and minerals within the school’s collection which had been mixed up during the aftermath of the May 20th, 2013 F-5 tornado. There is a lot to go through and we could use all the help we can get, so if you are free, please let us know!

Mayo Elementary School Visit // September 25

Elementary school children from Mayo Elementary in Tulsa, OK, will be visiting Sarkeys Energy Center on September 25. Members will be working with Dr. Randy Keller of the Oklahoma Geological Survey to educate the children about the geosciences. Dr. Keller will lead a geoscience lecture, while Pick and Hammer members will conduct seismology and mineral scavenger hunt activities.

Mini Golf Tournament // September 26

AAPG, Pick and Hammer, and SEG would like to invite you to participate in our mini golf tournament this Friday evening. A buffet style meal will be served at 8:30pm and groups of four will begin to "tee off" as you finish your food. There will be prizes for individual low scores including a rock hammer, an amethyst crystal and hammock tent from Backwoods. The lowest scoring team will also win a prize donated by Andy Alligator's. The food will be provided by Andy Alligator's from 8:30 - 9:30. They are going to grill up some hamburgers and hot dogs to be served with baked beans, slaw, chips and cookies. While they do serve beer, we will only be paying for non-alcoholic beverages. Please let me know if you have any special food requirements so we can accommodate you.

Science-In-Action Day // September 28

Pick and Hammer representatives will be manning a booth at the Sam Noble History Museum in Norman, OK. We will be educating the public on the rock cycle and rock identification, answering questions, and helping to identify any items the public brings in.

Whittier Middle School // October-

Pick and Hammer members will be visiting Whittier Middle School students every Thursday morning to help tutor the students in their geoscience education for the Science Olympiad competition. This year, the area we are helping out with is the Fossils section. Students are expected to know and be tested on a wide range of material include fossil identification, favorable conditions for fossilization, relative and absolute dating, geologic timescale, and major paleontological events to name a few. Pick and Hammer members will also help create and proctor a few of the Fossil Regional competitions. If you are interested in helping with this ongoing activity, please email the club.

Norman High Geoscience Lecture // October 16

This will be the first lecture of the school year at Norman High. We will visit them several more times over the academic year, teaching a different topic each time. Let us know if you are interested in either speaking or just coming along to see what it's like!

Pick and Hammer Meeting // October 16

We will be having a meeting this Thursday, October 16, at 5 pm in room 1446 in the Sarkey's Energy Center. We will be approving new edits to the constitution and discussing general club business such as trips and events. So come and enjoy some free food and get involved in the club this Thursday!

Rock Kit Creation // October 22

The Oklahoma Geological Survey was contacted by Oklahoma City schools to fill a need for rock kits in the Putnam City district. We will be creating those rock kits for OGS on the 22nd, so please let us know if you are available and willing to help! All the materials have been provided by OGS

Norman High Geoscience Lecture // October 23

This will be the second lecture of the school year at Norman High. If you are interested in giving a talk, let us know asap so that we can plan it. If you are interested in just coming along to see what it's like, also let us know!

Highland West Junior High: Career Day // October 31

Pick and Hammer officers will be going to Highland West Junior High in Moore, OK on October 31st to give a series of lectures on career opportunities within the geosciences. Opportunities we will discuss include petroleum geology, environmental geology, academia, and geophysics to name a few.

Geology Movie Night // November 16

Pick and Hammer is hosting its first Geology Movie Night on November 16th from 6pm-9pm. We will be meeting in room 340 on the Plaza level. There will be PIZZA and the awesome movie of your choice. Mineral Auction // November 19-20

We will having our first silent auction on Wednesday November 19th and Thursday November 20th from 10am-3pm! We will be auctioning off some of our specimens. The funds from this will go to paying for awesome trips and events for this Spring!

Mineral Auction // December 3-4

Pick and Hammer will be hosting another student mineral auction the Wednesday and Thursday after Thanksgiving from 10 am to 3 pm both days. It will be a silent auction, so stop by in between your classes! There will be new minerals each day as well as a "Buy it now" table featuring minerals and fossils you can purchase immediately. Norman High Geoscience Lecture // December 4

This will be the third lecture of the school year and the last of 2014 at Norman High. James and Curtis will be talking about mineralogy. If you would like to speak at one of these lectures, please let us know!

This will be our last meeting of the semester, and it will be at 5 pm in room 1446. We will be discussing outreach, future trips, and other club business and we will be serving Slim Chickens, so try to make it!

Norman High Geoscience Lecture // January 29

This will be the first lecture of the year at Norman High. We are continuing to teach the students about various aspects of the geosciences during their lunch period (12:15 pm - 12:52 pm). If you have an idea for a talk and/or would like to speak, please let us know.

Whittier at Sam Noble Museum // January 24

We will be giving the students of Whittier Middle School a guided tour of the Sam Noble Museum this Saturday. We will be explaining how the exhibits relate to the material they need to learn for their Science Olympiad competition.

Pick and Hammer Meeting // January 29

Hey Guys! It's time for our first meeting of the semester! We will talking about trips, outreach, events, and other general club business, as well as asking about potential officers. We will be serving pizza and drinks, so make sure to come by! The meeting will be held in Sarkeys in room 1446 at 5 pm.

Tucson Trip // February 6-9

The officers and a few potential officers will be leaving for Tucson on Friday, February 6, to drive to Tucson, Arizona, to buy minerals at this year's Gem and Mineral show. We will be purchasing items for the alumni and student auctions, as well as small specimens to be used to make rock kits for the schools the club has been working with. We will be returning late Monday night and will show everyone the minerals we bought at our next meeting.

Norman High Geoscience Lecture // February 12

Big Event Sign-Up Deadline // February 26

This will be the first year that the club has put together a team for Big Event and we are really excited! Student Auction // March 25th

We will be having a student auction in room 340 on Wednesday 3/25/15 from 10am - 3pm! Come by and bid on some of our awesome minerals or visit our buy it now table! Shirts for Italy fundraising will also be sold if you are interested in helping support those going on the Study Abroad trip this summer. 

Science Olympiad Competition // March 7th

After a semester of visiting Whittier Middle School students every Thursday morning to help tutor the students in their geoscience education for the Science Olympiad competition. Students are expected to know and be tested on a wide range of material include fossil identification, favorable conditions for fossilization, relative and absolute dating, geologic timescale, and major paleontological events to name a few. This year, we helped out with the Fossils section. So now it is finally time for their last competition!

Washington Elementary Sign-Up Deadline // March 6th

Washington Elementary School will be visiting Sarkeys on March 12 from 11 am to 1 pm. We need people to help guide the students around Sarkeys and help with the cupcake coring, stream table, and seismic activities. School Spring Picnic // April 25th

The school will be having its annual Spring Picnic at Lions' Park in Norman. It will start at noon with a softball game between the Geologists and the Geophysicists, followed by a barbeque at 2:30 pm. The picnic will close with awards around 5 pm. This event is a lot of fun and is a great way to relax before starting to study for finals, so try to make it! If you would like to go but need a ride, please email us.
