Important Dates:

Alumni Mineral Auction // April 4

The auction and banquet will take place at the Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center in Norman. The event starts at 6:00 pm, but we need help with setup around 4:30 pm. Setup includes taking the minerals out of their boxes, placing them on tables, and getting the cashier area up and running. During the banquet, volunteers will be sitting at the mineral tables answering any questions potential bidders have about them. The attire will be business/cocktail. Please send us an email if you are interested in attending so that we can add you to the list. If you are not on the list, you CANNOT attend. The event should end around 10 pm.

Pick and Hammer Meeting // March 3

We will be discussing club business over free food and we will end the meeting with a small mineral auction for all who attend. The meeting and auction will take place in SEC 1446 and we will have five minerals and three microscopes up for auction. The funds from this auction will go towards the upkeep of the display cases and towards fixing the microscopes in P101. Make sure to have your money with you, as you will need to pay for any winnings before you leave.

Norman High School Talks // February 19 & 27

We will be giving another presentation to the students, this time on the topic of volcanoes, earthquakes, paleontology, and anything else for which we have time. The presentation will go from 12:05 pm to 12:55 pm.

Lincoln Elementary Classroom Visit // February 17

We will be visiting Lincoln Elementary from 2 to 3 pm to show them our cool rocks and pass around hand samples. If interested, please fill out the doodle poll.

Boy Scouts Visit // February 15

The Cub Scouts will be visiting Sarkey's from 10 am to 12 pm and we will be teaching them about geology. We will also be helping some Boy Scouts earn their geology badges.

Norman High School Talk // February 13

We will be talking the Norman High School students from 12:05 pm to 1:10 pm about earthquakes and fracking, and we will be joined by Dean Grillot.

Irving Middle School // February 12

We will be visiting Irving Middle School on February 12 from 2:40 pm to 3:40 pm to talk about rocks with 6th, 7th, and 8th. If you are interested in volunteering or have any questions about what will be covered, please let me know.

Also, when we visit schools we always send at least two people and usually at least one of them has been on outreach visits before. So if you've been thinking about volunteering, but aren't sure about what to say-don't worry! And sign up!

Whittier Middle School // February 11

We will be continuing to help the Whittier students prepare for their Science Olympiad competition, and we will be visiting the students again on February 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, and 25.

Pick and Hammer Meeting // February 6

We will be having our next meeting on February 6 at 5 pm in SEC 1446. We have a little club business, but mostly we will be hanging out, showing everyone the new auction minerals we got at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show this past weekend, and working on cleaning and repairing the microscopes that the club will be auctioning off and raffling off at the Spring Expo. We would really like to have everyone there to help. There will also be food provided and it will give everyone a chance to see the awesome minerals the officers bought at the Tucson Gem and Mineral show.

Lincoln Elementary Classroom Visit // February 4

Washington Elementary Sarkey's Visit // January 24

Students from Washington Elementary School will be visiting Sarkey's on the 24th. There will be 4 stations total (Mineral Cases, Seismic Activity, Lunch, and Cupcake Coring). We need at least 3 volunteers from 11:15 to 11:45 for setup, at least 4 volunteers to guide each group through SEC, at least 4 volunteers for the mineral cases, at least 2 volunteers for the seismic activity, and at least 2 volunteers for the cupcake coring activity. We don't need any volunteers for lunch, but some would be appreciated (just to talk to students/teachers about geoscience). We also need at least 3 volunteers to cleanup from 1:45 to 2 pm.

Washington Elementary Classroom Visits // Week of January 13

Volunteers will be teaching the kids at Washington Elementary School the same topics as they taught at Reagan. There will be four classes from 2-2:40 pm Tuesday through Friday. Please sign up for when you would like to volunteer on the doodle poll.

Reagan Elementary Classroom Visits // Week of January 13

Volunteers will be visiting Reagan Elementary School this week to talk to the kids about geology. They will be teaching the kids about the very basics of minerals (physical properties and uses), the rock cycle, the variety of rocks within each category, and showing them hand samples. Classroom Volunteering Training Session // January 12

We will be having an optional, informal training session Sunday at 3 pm to go over the material we will present to students. We will go through a mock lesson to give you an idea of what to talk about, share some talking points, and answer any questions. If you have been thinking about volunteering, but aren't sure what you would need to do, this is a great way to find out! Plus, free food!

Bowling Party // December 7

A joint event hosted by AAPG, SEG, and the Pick and Hammer Club. We’ve reserved 4 lanes and Marathon Oil will be sponsoring the event. This will be the last event of the semester. We plan on being there from 6 pm to 8 pm.

Pick and Hammer Meeting // November 21

The meeting, the last in the semester, will be held in SEC 1446 at 5 pm and we will be going to O'Connell's afterwards for dinner.

Quartz Mountain Trip // November 9

We will be going to Quartz Mountain on the ninth and we will hang out, do a little climbing, and see some interesting geology. We will be leaving at 8 am and returning around 5 pm. Photo release and safety forms are required to go and must be turned in to Teresa the day before the trip.

Norman High School // November 7

Volunteers will speak to the students about why those chose to study the geosciences and about their experiences. Volunteers will also speak to Professor Askey's physics class for 40 minutes about the same subject.

Whittier Middle School // November 5

Volunteers are needed to assist Whittier Middle School similarly to how they assisted Longfellow.

Longfellow Middle School // October 31 & November 1

The first official outreach opportunity of the 2013-2014 school year is mentoring at Longfellow Middle School from 9 to 10:45 am for their Science Olympiad Team in the rock and mineral category. Science Olympiad is a competition that covers various topics such as nature of genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering, and technology. The teams compete at different competitions against teams from around the state. Volunteers will teach the team about the rock cycle, mineral ID, and the three rock types. The Risk Management Department will be giving a presentation to help everyone understand what you can and cannot do when we have visiting students. Pizza is provided and the meeting will be held in SEC 340.

Colloquium Snacks Volunteering // Fall 2013

Marathon Oil Disc Golf Tournament and BBQ // September 28

The Disc Golf Tournament starts at noon and is a joint event between Pick & Hammer, SEG, and AAPG. The event will take place at Griffin Park (directions provided on request) on Saturday, September 28th. The event is funded by Marathon Oil and local sponsors. The event is open to anyone associated with the Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy and their families. The event and food are free. Burgers, veg-burgers, brats, baked beans, potato salad, and corn were served, along with Eskimo Sno snowcones from 2 pm to 5 pm. Prizes are awarded for the lowest overall scores, the lowest scores on the front and back 9, and for the lowest scores on certain holes. Prizes include but are not limited to a Galaxy Note 10.1", $100 gift card to Wal-Mart, Hiker Pro Microfilter water purifier, headlamps, and rock hammer with holster. The first 150 people will to receive a commemorative t-shirt.

Great Salt Plains Trip // September 14

We will be going to the Great Salt Plains in northern Oklahoma. The group will be leaving Sarkeys at 8:00 am. Only 12 spaces are available and the attendees will be able to dig for selenite crystals while at the park. Members are encouraged to bring a lunch, water, sunscreen, a hat, a shovel, and money for dinner. Back to School Mixer // September 13

Join us at the Annual ConocoPhillips School of Geology and Geophysics Back to School Mixer at 5:30 pm, where attendees, student and faculty will enjoy free food and entertainment at the Clear Bay Café on Lake Thunderbird. Volunteers are needed to drive school vehicles to enable people without transportation to attend and be designated drivers for those that need it.

OU Engineering Career Fair // September 12

Members are encouraged to attend the career fair and stop by the Marathon Oil table to set up interviews and ask any questions.

Pick and Hammer Meeting // September 5

The first meeting of the year will be held in room 1410 in the Sarkeys Energy Center at 5:30 pm. There will be a pizza social beforehand in room A235 while Dr. Elwood-Madden and Dr. Pranter discuss and answer questions regarding applying to graduate school. General club business, such as constitution edits, will be discussed at the meeting, as well as letting our members know about upcoming events.

New Mexico Backpacking Trip // August 31 - September 2

The trip will be over Labor Day Weekend. Students will bring their own gear and enjoy some spectacular scenery while hiking at Wheeler Peak.

Welcome Back BBQ // August 28

Students will be representing the Club by visiting and/or manning the Club booth while enjoying free food, snowcones, music, and t-shirts. The BBQ starts at 11 am and ends at 1 pm.

National Weather Center Day // August 27

The Club will be attending an event at the NWC for 150 children. Volunteers will be talking to the children about natural disasters and answering any questions. The event starts at 5:30 pm and will end at 8 pm.

Town Hall Meeting // August 22

The meeting will start at 3:30 pm. Students will be able to meet professors and hear about upcoming activities.

Sooner Orientation - Involvement Fair // August 18

Volunteers will man a table answering questions about the Club and encourage students to become new members. All the clubs and organizations on campus are gathered and they inform new students of the opportunities available at OU. The event starts at 4:30 pm.

Sooner Orientation - Move-in Day // August 15

Volunteers from the Pick and Hammer club will be helping new students move into the dorms.

Summer Exploration Program // July 29

Approximately 40 kids from OU KinderCare, ages 5-11, will be coming to Sarkey’s Energy Center to get a tour of the building along with taking part in several interactive activities. Lunch will be provided for the kids and volunteers. Volunteers will lead tours, guide the groups around the building, and lead the interactive activities. The schedule is below. Try to arrive at least 15 minutes before you are scheduled to volunteer.

10:00-10:30: Mineral/Rock case tour (2nd floor and OGS cases)
10:30-11:00: The layers of Earth (demonstration using Styrofoam models)
11:00-11:30: Magma mixing demonstration
11:30-noon: Lunch (Outdoors on plaza level if sunny, East Atrium if rainy)
