SOCIAL GEOLOGY CLUB AT THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA
Pick and Hammer
About the Club
Pick and Hammer is a student geoscience club, founded in 1903, whose purpose is to raise awareness about the importance of geological studies and to create a place where students who are interested in rocks can meet. These goals are accomplished by engaging students and the community through trips and social events. In previous years, we've led geology focused trips to Mt. Wheeler, NM and the Oklahoma Great Salt Plains.
In the past few years, Pick and Hammer has started an outreach program which allows club members to educate younger students within the community about the geosciences. This program has not only aided local elementary, middle, and high school teachers, but has provided exciting opportunities for OU students to develop teaching skills and spark interest in a younger generation of potential geoscientists. We have had the opportunity to host field trips of Sarkeys Energy Center as well as visits to the schools themselves, where the students learn through various hands-on activities and presentations.
Pick and Hammer has been fortunate enough to be supported by various companies, including Halliburton, and alumni who recognize the importance of our outreach efforts, and have contributed to the program in various ways. One of our most recent donations is from the late alumnus George McGhee, who generously donated his large rock and mineral collection to be used as a teaching aid for the club as well as provide the basis for teaching collections we will be distributing to various schools within the community. We were also fortunate enough to have many samples from Dr. David London's collection donated to us during his last year here at the University of Oklahoma.
