Our Outreach Program

Volunteering - The Pick and Hammer Club

The OU Pick and Hammer Club's commitment to service focuses on bringing our love for geology and science to the community. By visiting classrooms, participating in community events, and developing our own teaching tools and events, we hope to inspire the next generation of young scientists.

To invite us to your event or classroom please contact us via the "Contact Us!" tab or contact the Outreach Officer directly (found under the "Officers" tab).

To see images from our past events please view the “Scrapbook” tab.

2015 GSA Presentation

In November of 2015, the president gave a presentation prepared by past and current officers at the Geological Society of America's annual meeting in Baltimore, Maryland. The presentation gave an overview of our outreach program as well as a brief history and examples of our curriculum. Go to Outreach Photos to view the slideshow!

Elementary School Outreach

Pick and Hammer enjoys bringing a passion for the geosciences to students at a young age. We do this by going into elementary classrooms and helping teach the Earth Science courses with an interactive lecture and our vast mineral collection.

Middle School Outreach

We facilitate Earth Science education at the middle school level by volunteering at Whittier Middle School to help prepare them for their Science Olympiad competitions. Also, we are able to help give geoscience career presentations and increase teachers' rock and mineral collection sizes in the community.

Other Outreach

Occasionally we are contacted by local clubs and schools from across the country. We respond to these letters, often sending minerals kits and specimens or offering tours, speeches, and classroom visits. In December 2015, our Public Outreach officer went to her home country, Pakistan, to talk about geology careers. Check out the presentation in our Outreach Photos!
